PCSO: Man had marijuana hidden next to newborn childPosted: Updated:
PINAL COUNTY, Ariz. -- A man was arrested Friday afternoon after a deputy with the Pinal County Sheriff’s Office allegedly found several pounds of marijuana hidden in his SUV next to his newborn child.
PCSO said a deputy was patrolling westbound Interstate 10 near milepost 200 when he saw a Cadillac Escalade with excessively dark window tint.
The deputy radioed in the license plate number and discovered that the vehicle also had no insurance.
The deputy pulled the SUV over and found 22-year-old Alejandro Ortiz inside the vehicle along with his wife and 12-day-old child.
The couple reportedly told the deputy that they were on their way from Tucson to Phoenix.
According to PCSO, the deputy became suspicious because Ortiz appeared to be nervous.
The deputy proceeded to let his K-9 investigate the vehicle, at which time the dog alerted the deputy to a portion of the SUV.
The deputy allegedly went on to find 15 pounds of marijuana hidden in a secret compartment which was near Ortiz’s child.
Ortiz was arrested and booked into the Pinal County Jail on charges of possession of marijuana and transportation of marijuana.
His wife was released at the scene with their child because she could not be tied to the marijuana.
PCSO said they seized the vehicle and started paperwork to begin the forfeiture process.
