PHOENIX -- The Maricopa County Sheriff’s Office said they arrested a man this week who was trying to smuggle five Mexican nationals into the United States.

MCSO said deputies stopped Adam Ortiz, 26, Thursday night while driving an SUV through the Valley.

Inside the vehicle deputies reportedly found five individuals who had allegedly paid up to $4,000 each to be smuggled across the border.

During his arrest, Ortiz allegedly assaulted one of the deputies.

MCSO said at the time of his arrest Ortiz was free on bond from New Mexico on armed robbery charges.

Ortiz remained behind bars in Phoenix Friday night.
