Worker killed by large pipe at Bagdad MinePosted: Updated:
BAGDAD, Ariz. -- A worker was killed during a construction accident at the Bagdad Mine northwest of Phoenix Thursday afternoon.
Alvin Thomas, 30, was part of a crew fitting a row of large pipes together when one of the pipes came loose and struck him in the back of his head, according to preliminary information released by the Yavapai County Sheriff's Office.
The pipe section was 40 feet long with a 3-foot radius and weighed more than 5,000 pounds.
Personnel from the Bagdad Fire Department arrived within minutes but were unable to resuscitate Thomas.
The cause of death is pending review by the medical examiner's office.
Thomas, of Many Farms, Ariz., was a contract worker with the Freeport-McMoRan Copper and Gold Mine in Bagdad.
The Arizona State Mine Inspector's Office will be conducting an investigation.
