MESA, Ariz. -- A 52-year-old man was arrested after he allegedly hit a Mesa police officer early Tuesday morning.

Richard Miller was booked into jail for criminal trespassing and aggravated assault on a police officer.

Police said the patrol officer contacted Miller because he was trespassing near Mesa Drive and Brown Road in Mesa at about 4 a.m.

The officer said Miller was "acting crazy" and kept putting his hands into his bag, according to police spokesman Sgt. Tony Landato. The officer told him to stop reaching into the bag but he refused.

Fearing there was a weapon in the bag, the officer grabbed it to take it away from Miller.

Landato said Miller then hit the officer in the face and head. The officer deployed his stun gun, but it was ineffective.

Other officers arrived on scene and tased Miller, who then fell to the ground and was handcuffed.

Miller was transported to Mesa Regional Hospital before being booked into jail.

The officer, whose name was not released, was transported to Banner Desert Medical Center for a swollen eye.
