PHOENIX -- An off-duty Phoenix police officer was involved in a shooting early Saturday morning.

Police said the officer was working security at a nightclub in the area of 41st Avenue and Bell Road when he reportedly saw three men stealing items from his SUV.

The officer got into an altercation with the men, which resulted in shots being fired.

One of the suspects was killed, while another suspect was hospitalized in extremely critical condition.

The third man was taken into custody.

The officer was not injured during the shooting.

Police said it's not unusual for officers to work off-duty jobs like security at a club. At the time of Saturday's incident the officer was wearing his uniform.

"We are officers, we're officers 24 hours a day," said Sgt. Tommy Thompson. "The difference in this one, the individuals were actually removing things from the officer's vehicle."
