PHOENIX -- One woman is dead and another woman is facing criminal charges following an unusual accident in Phoenix early Saturday morning.

A naked woman was reportedly sitting in the middle of the roadway at 34th Street and Thomas Road when she was fatally struck by a car.

Police said the victim walked into the middle of the road just after midnight and began to take off her clothes.

She then laid down in the road and was struck by a Toyota Yaris, which was allegedly being driven by Aimee Butel, 43. Butel is an attorney and a former Maricopa County medical examiner.

According to police, Butel initially stopped and observed the scene, but then fled when officers arrived.

Police got a description of Butel's vehicle and were able to locate her a short time later.

Butel reportedly showed signs of impairment and was booked into jail on charges of leaving the scene of a fatal traffic collision and DUI.

Butel was released from jail on Saturday. She is due in court for a status conference on April 5.

The victim's name has not been released.
