TUCON, Ariz. -- A Tucson woman and her live-in boyfriend now face first-degree murder charges following the alleged beating death of the woman's 4-year-old son.
Tucson police said the boy died from his injuries Saturday morning.
Police initially arrested Judy Minley, 26, and James Dwight Robinson, 27, on child abuse charges. Both remain at the Pima County Jail.
Tucson Fire Department paramedics were called to a report of a near-drowning at an apartment located in the 5400 block of East Williams Thursday morning, according to police.
Paramedics found the 4-year-old boy unconscious and unresponsive. They were able to revive the child and noted that there was severe bruising on various parts of his body. He was taken to a hospital trauma center for additional treatment.
Doctors determined the bruises were suspicious in nature and considered to be "non-accidental trauma."
During an investigation, police said Minley and Robinson allegedly disciplined the boy over several hours Wednesday then put him to bed. He was found unresponsive Thursday morning.
Police said there was no indication that the child had actually been under water or nearly drowned as was originally reported to paramedics.
