MESA, Ariz. -- Mesa police have arrested a man on a second degree murder charge for allegedly killing his girlfriend.

Police said 35-year-old Travis Lafel Zah took his girlfriend’s life Thursday after the two got into a physical altercation in a field near a neighborhood at 2nd Avenue and Mesa Drive.

Police found a knife at the scene, and took Zah into custody after initially taking him to the hospital for treatment.

Authorities believe they have identified the victim, but are still trying to notify her next-of-kin.
