PHOENIX -- Not only is it the first day of spring, it's Arizona Gives Day, a one-day online fundraiser that allows Arizonans to make donation to as many nonprofit organizations as possible in 24 hours.

The campaign started at midnight, and by the end of the day, nearly 8,600 generous Arizonans had contributed more than $928,500 in more than 11,000 donations to various organizations and projects. That's an average of $108 and change per unique donor.

"Because of your generosity, countless lives will be impacted through your investment in nonprofits that improve the quality of life in our great state," read Thursday.

The minimum donation was $10, and you might be surprised just how far the 800 registered organizations can make that money go.

While this was a first for Arizona, other states have run similar program with great success. The message to individual donors is that their dollars matter -- a lot.

"Individual giving makes up the largest portion of charitable contributions in the United States," Arizona Gives Day spokeswoman Marissa Theisen told 3TV's Stella Inger. "We really need individuals in Arizona to step up to support our local nonprofits. ... It's a critical time to support Arizona nonprofits. Many of them are small. They really rely on individual donations, and, believe it or not, $10 goes a long way. You'd be amazed at what these nonprofits do with just a little bit of money and a lot of heart."

According to Theisen, there are more than 15,000 nonprofits in Arizona. More than 800 have registered to be part of Arizona Gives Day. Those organizations benefit a variety of causes and projects throughout the Grand Canyon State.

Helping others can help you, as well.

"We also know that by giving, you actually feel better," Theisen explained. "There are scientific studies that say it improves your health."

The Alliance of Arizona Nonprofits is already looking ahead to the next Arizona Gives Day.
