Job fairs put hundreds of job openings at job seekers' feet

PHOENIX -- Hundreds of jobs are up for grabs at several job fairs happening today and later this month around the valley.

Monday, applicants flocked to the Phoenix Airport Marriott, where more than 500 jobs were available at a job fair. The event was was set up by a local job board, Industries hiring included business, education, transportation, sales, customer service, technical support, retail, health care and more. Some of the companies on hand were State Farm, Liberty Mutual, Basha's, Truly Nolan, just to name a few.

Ryan Naylor, the founder and president of, says no matter what job fair you attend there are three things you should do: be prepared, be enthusiastic, and follow through.

"It's a first test, it really determines if that job seeker is ready to take on any level of responsibilities. So when an employer asks you to do something, follow through," Naylor said.

"We are extremely excited about the next 12 months. A lot of companies coming from out of state relocating to Arizona," he added.

Naylor also says for all of those who are discouraged when it comes to looking for work, there is help out there.

"There are support groups. If you need that motivation, that extra push, go on to our website We have support groups that happen six times per month to help you get motivated," he said.The next job fair is expected to take place on May 20.


The United States Post Office is also hiring mail handler assistants right now. Job seekers can apply online Monday through midnight on the post office website..

For these jobs, applicants must be at least 18 years old or a high school graduate and pass postal exams 473E and 473. Background checks and drug tests will be conducted. Starting pay is $13.75 an hour and there are limited employee benefits in the first year of employment.


Also, an upcoming job fair will be aimed directly at veterans and military families. On March 28 at the University of Phoenix Stadium, local and national companies will be on site to hire veterans and military spouses.

More than 40 companies hope to meet with potential employees. Those companies include Avesis, Camelback Toyota Scion, Arizona Department of Public Safety., Chesapeake Energy Drilling Division, Home Depot, Prudential Financial, Goodman Manufacturing Co., L-3 Communications, Diamond Resorts International, U.S. Customs and Border Protection, USAA, and many more.

This event takes place Thursday, March 28, 2013. from 11am to 3 pm at the  University of Phoenix Stadium in Glendale.


Craving a career at Portillo's? The Midwest favorite is planning a huge job fair in the valley next week. Popular Chicago-based Portillos is  is holding a three-day, Valleywide Job Fair, March 26 - 28. The goal is to add more than 60 hourly positions at the company's newest location at 10574 N. 90th Street in Scottsdale, and several management positions for their upcoming Tempe location.

"Our Scottsdale opening was the largest in our company history, said Dick Portillo, owner and founder of The Portillo Restaurant Group,  "In one day alone during our first week, we sold a half ton of beef and a ton of French fries.  Sales have exceeded our expectations, and we continue to add to our staff so we can provide the best food and best service to our customers."

Finally, The Department of Economic Security is holding its own job fair. The DES is inviting job seekers to come meet with more than 160 potential employers at the Annual DES Career Expo.

The event is free to job seekers.  Participating employers represent a variety of industries including: banking, customer service, engineering, law enforcement, restaurant, retail sales, marketing, security and software/IT.

Career Expo 2013will be held Wednesday, March 20, at the  Arizona State Fairgrounds Exhibit Building. The fairgrounds are located at 1826 W. McDowell Rd in Phoenix,.

All these job fairs couldn't have come at a better time. The latest reports show Arizona's unemployment rate is up, rising from 7.9 percent in December to 8 percent in January.
