Man arrested in death of Mesa smoke shop owner

MESA, Ariz. (AP) -- Mesa police arrested a man in connection with the stabbing death of the owner of a Mesa smoke shop.

23-year-old Chad Stevens faces felony charges of of first-degree murder, robbery and burglary.
 
Around 1 p.m. Friday, business owners in the area of University Drive and Extension Road heard a commotion at the smoke shop, and called police.

As officers pulled up to the shop, they reportedly saw a man  covered in some kind of red substance. emerging from the smoke shop, and carrying a box full of cigarette cartons. According to court documents, when he saw officers, the man dropped the box and fled.

Police say the suspect then took off running. But he was arrested shortly afterward at a nearby apartment complex.

When officers went into the smoke shop, they found 59-year-old Abdou G. Abdou dead. He was the owner and operator of the store. Police believe Stevens stabbed the victim, stole cash and cigarettes, then left the store.
