Family of hit and run victim speaks outPosted: Updated:
PHOENIX -- Lourdes Hernandez did not see her uncle get hit the first time, but as she ran to him while he was on the ground, he was hit once more by a second driver.
“It didn’t stop, it continued driving,” said Hernandez. “I screamed and they didn’t listen.”
Her uncle, 47-year-old Angel Hernandez-Sotelo, was dragged several hundred feet when he was hit a second time.
Both drivers fled the scene of the accident on 7th Street near Roeser Road in South Phoenix. Hernandez-Sotelo was pronounced dead at the scene.
“We’re all sad,” said Hernandez. “We know he’s in a better place and we need to stay strong.”
Investigators say the first car that hit Hernandez-Sotelo while he crossed the street on his bicycle was a rented Ford Taurus. The driver abandoned the car at a nearby liquor store.
Lourdes is pleading for the driver’s cooperation.
"If he’s watching this, to turn himself in,” she said. “It didn’t have to end like that, his life.”
Police have not identified the driver of the second vehicle.
Angel’s extended family is hoping to raise enough money to send his body back to Mexico and they will place donation canisters around businesses.
Angel leaves behind five sons in Mexico.
