Conservative website questions Mark Kelly's gun purchasePosted: Updated:
TUCSON, Ariz. -- A popular conservative website is suggesting that the husband of former Congresswoman Gabby Giffords might not be telling the truth about his recent trip to the gun store.
An article posted over the weekend on Breitbart.com says Mark Kelly visited a gun store in Tucson on March 5 and purchased an AR-15 and a semi-automatic pistol.
According to Breitbart.com, the editor of the newsletter Guns & Patriots, Neil McCabe, was told by sources that Kelly also purchased “high capacity” magazines.
McCabe contacted Kelly’s gun control group, Americans for Responsible Solutions, on March 6, and on March 8 they responded that his message had been passed on to the people who handle press requests.
Breitbart.com said they then began investigating Kelly’s purchase.
A few days after purchasing the firearms, Kelly took to Facebook to post a photo of himself buying the guns and state that he would be returning the AR-15.
“Looks like the judiciary committee will vote on background checks next week. I just had a background check a few days ago when I went to my local gun store to buy a 45. As I was leaving, I noticed a used AR-15. Bought that too. Even to buy an assault weapon, the background check only takes a matter of minutes. I don't have possession yet but I'll be turning it over to the Tucson PD when I do. Scary to think of people buying guns like these without a background check at a gun show or the Internet. We really need to close the gun show and private seller loop hole.”
Kelly has yet to say anything else about his recent gun purchase, but Breitbart.com suggests that Kelly never intended to return the weapon until members of the media learned of his purchase.
Kelly became a vocal supporter of gun control after Giffords was shot in the head in January of 2011 during a mass shooting in Tucson.
This past January, Kelly and Giffords formed Americans for Responsible Solutions, which works to “encourage elected officials to stand up for solutions to prevent gun violence and protect responsible gun ownership”
