PRESCOTT VALLEY, Ariz. -- Authorities in Yavapai County believe the remains of a man reported missing in 2011 were discovered this week.

The Yavapai County Sheriff’s Office said they received a call Wednesday from a Prescott Valley man who said he had come across what he thought were human remains while out horseback riding.

Deputies visited an area north of the man’s home and found what they confirmed to be human remains.

Due to darkness, detectives were forced to continue their investigation on Thursday, which is when they were able to determine that the remains were that of Terry Ferrell.

According to YCSO, Ferrell was last seen on July 3, 2011 at his Coyote Springs home.

At the time, friends and family said that Ferrell was despondent and likely in possession of a handgun.

Authorities searched for Ferrell, who was 48 at the time of his disappearance, for about two weeks without any success.

The medical examiner has since taken custody of the remains. A cause of death and an identity confirmation are pending their review.
