Phoenix weather: Winter storm comingPosted: Updated:
PHOENIX -- A strong winter storm is moving down the coast of California and eyeing Arizona. Today, we'll get some clouds ahead of the storm, so expect a partly sunny day with highs in the upper 70s. By tonight, we could see showers, and snow showers will begin in the high country.
By Friday afternoon, look for the rain and snow to become more widespread. The Valley could get between a half an inch and an inch of rain. Thunderstorms could also develop with small hail, thunder and lightning all possible. Winds are expected to pick up, with gusts of up to 30 mph possible.
In the high country, a Winter Storm Warning and Winter Weather Advisory is in effect for Friday and Saturday for heavy snow and blowing snow. Elevations above 6,000 feet could end up with 8 to 14 inches of snow, and elevations above 4,000 feet could see 1 to 4 inches of snow.
On Saturday, the snow continues to fall in the high country, and there is a chance for scattered showers in the Valley. Expect a cold day with a high of only 60 degrees. The storm moves out by Sunday for mostly sunny skies and a high of about 70. Next week, look for dry weather and a gradual warm-up.
