EL MIRAGE, Ariz. -- El Mirage police have arrested a man for allegedly abusing his two year old daughter.

Police say on the evening of March 2, at around 8:00 p.m., a Youngtown mother picked  up her two year old daughter after the child had spent the the previous night at her biological father's house.

The father, 24 year old James O'Mahoney, has visitation with his daughter one night a week.

When the mother got her daughter home, she noticed a large bump on the girl's forehead and some bruises on her body. When she called O'Mahoney , he reportedly told her the daughter fell off a bed, or might have been hurt at the park.

Later, when the mom went to change the girl's diaper, she noticed more extensive bruising. She tells police she tried to contact O'Mahoney , but he never picked up. So, she contacted the police.

A medical examination revealed a bruise on the child's forehead, bruising on her torso and back, and a burn on one hand that was consistent with a cigarette burn. She had no internal injuries, and a series of x-rays showed no abnormalities. The attending physician said the injuries were consistent with physical abuse.

After an all night investigation by El Mirage Officers and Detectives, O'Mahoney was arrested and booked into the Fourth Avenue Jail on one count of Child Abuse.

According to the police report, O'Mahoney has denied any involvement in the child's injuries. He told police he never spanked her

He's due back in court on March 11.
