Mom Approved Remedies for Your Beauty Winter Woes

Posted: Updated:

Last month I asked my gal pals what their favorite home remedies are for cold and flu season and I got such a good response that I decided to quiz them again when it came to writing this topic.  As expected, I got some great answers.  Some are homeopathic and some are favorite products, so take a look and get some relief for your chapped lips, static hair, dry skin and more.

Hair Help

With the cooler dry weather comes dry hair that flies around with that annoying static.  You have probably heard this remedy before, good ol' dryer sheets, and it really does work.  Simply rub a sheet down your hair and the static is greatly reduced.  Keep a few with you in the event that your hair picks up static from the car seat or elsewhere.  This is tried and true and I have found that Bounce works the best and I buy the free and sensitive kind that is free of dyes and perfumes and that still works great for my laundry and for my static hair.

Another option for really static active hair is to spray some hair spray on your mane.  When you style your hair in the morning, spray each strand before you roll or straighten in your curling or flat iron.  I have found this to really work, too.

It pays to use a good quality flat iron too that is made with 100% solid ceramic plates. A lot of flat irons may claim to have 100% solid ceramic plates, but many are actually made with metal alloy with a ceramic coating. An iron with metal plates will easily burn, damage or dry out hair, so buy a brand like NuMe to be sure that you are getting one made with 100% solid ceramic plates.  NuMe flat irons and other hair styling tools can be ordered at

One of my gal pals, Debbie told me that she swears by using mayo for her hair repair, but she stresses that the condiment works for dry hair, not for an oily type of mane.  Debbie says that she uses about one cup of store brand mayo and applies it to her scalp.  She then works her way down until the entire head is covered.  She applies it to her dry hair, but her mother puts it on damp hair and both ways work according to Debbie.  Once the mayo is applied, wrap hair in a towel or shower cap and leave in for about 30 minutes.  Then wash hair once or twice, without conditioning.  Debbie says you will get silky smooth hair and she gives herself this treatment once a month.

Another gal pal, Kelly tells me that organic extra virgin coconut oil is great for taming dry frizzy hair and really to treat all over body dryness.  To tame frizzy flyaways, rub a dime-sized amount (a little goes a long way) of coconut oil on to dry ends.  I love this tip because unrefined coconut oil is good for your body, inside and out, so you can cook with it and treat your beauty winter woes with it, too.

Chapped Lips Love

Two weeks ago, I noticed after I finished applying my lip stick and lip liner, that I was sporting some major dry skin flakes on my lips, which I can't stand.  I was preparing for my 3TV segment, so I didn't have a lot of time, so I took it all off and then applied Aquaphor Advanced Therapy Healing Ointment and then I took a clean foundation sponge and wiped the flakes away.  It worked and I was able to quickly reapply my lip color and get out the door.

My friend, Tonya says that the absolute best lip balm is Virtuoso, which is sold in a 3-pack at Trader Joe's.  It is actually called Trader Johann's Lip Balm Virtusoso SPF 15 Spearmint Lip Balm and it is sold at Trader Joe's.

LUSH has an interesting product that exfoliates lips called Popcorn Lip Scrub.  Made with salt and sugar, this formula enables you to exfoliate away dry skin lip flakes with a fun and tasty popcorn scent and taste.  I like the LUSH line because all products are handmade using fresh fruit and veggie ingredients and this company is also earth-friendly, using little or no wasteful packaging.  The containers that they do use are made with 100% post consumer recycled materials. LUSH products can be purchased in several local LUSH stores that are housed in the Scottsdale Fashion Square Mall and Chandler Fashion Center and also at

Body Be Smooth Ideas

Another LUSH product that works great for all over body moisturizing is the LUSH Ro's Argan Body Skin Conditioner.  This rose jam scented conditioner for the body contains cypress oil capuacu butter, Brazil nut oil, cocoa butter, shea butter and argan oil, which is rich in Vitamin E.  The 20% glycerine locks in moisture, which leaves skin smooth.  Simply shower as usual, apply body conditioner and then rinse off.  You will love how your skin feels after using this great stuff.

My friend Bianca says to add a tiny bit of baby oil to your favorite lotion for amazing legs all year long.

I recently discovered Prestiche that has a line of Wonder Polish that exfoliates the body.  My favorite scent is the Ocean Mist variety and they have several other nice fragrances like Sweet Orange Tangerine.  Use this great exfoliator twice a week to slough off dry and dead skin cells that will help your skin stay hydrated in the winter months.  I also love the line's whipped and creamy Creme De La Creme lotion that locks moisture into dry skin.  My favorite is the Sweet Orange Mango Papaya scent.  Check out and order the Prestiche line at

Dry Harsh Hands Help

Gal pal Lisa tells me that she absolutely swears by O'Keeffe's Working Hands for her son's extremely dry hands that he gets in the winter.  She says that her boy gets really deep cracks in his fingertips and toes that often bleed. They have tried Cornhuskers lotion, Eucerin & many different products with little success. Lisa says when they tried the O'Keeffe's brand, it was amazing. It promotes healing and circulation to the area.  Her family puts white cotton gloves or cotton socks on to help the healing at night. You can buy it at Bed, Bath & Beyond and hardware stores or visit  O'Keeffe's was made by people who work with their hands every day.  Lisa also says to let you know that when applied, it brings heat to the area, so don't be surprised by that.  After Lisa posted this to my Facebook page, several other friends added that this works great for their husband's rough hands, too.

For The Feet

Friends Bianca and Kenzie both recommended Toe Juice for dry cracked feet and my friend Amy also told me that she tried Toe Juice after I showed it in a segment last year.  She says it did wonders for her feet.  Pair it with a pedicure scrubbing tool and you will get smooth heels that look and feel nice.  Made with a blend of plant extracts called Dermavine, Toe Juice works and is sold at Walgreens or visit

Tonya go to dry feet solution stuff is Aquaphor.  Her family slathers it on feet before bed with socks on while they sleep.  She says that their skin is much smoother by morning.

A Body Wash That Is For The Face, Too

Last but not least, I have found a body wash that can also be used on my face, which I love for my showers and for my daughter's bathing because we both have sensitive skin.  Sebamed Liquid Face & Body Wash is 100% soap free, so it doesn't dry my skin.  Plus it is hypoallergenic and paraben free and is vitamin enriched.  This wash contains a natural based buffer that adjusts to the skin's ph level.  I really like it and it sells at CVS drug stores.  For more information visit
