MESA  -- The city of Mesa is giving a shout-out to a young resident who hit the stage in Hollywood Sunday night.

23 year old AJ Young is a graduate of Mesa's Dobson High School. Sunday night he appeared onstage at the 85th Annual Academy Awards show.

Young was one of six winners of the "Oscar Experience College Search." It's a contest that rewards young filmakers and gives them the opportunity to hand out the golden statues at the Oscars.

Young is a film major at Columbia College in Chicago. He later tweeted, "You know it's real life when the Academy follows you on Twitter."

Young says as a child, he used make stop-animation movies with Lego guys dubbed as WWF wrestlers.

His current project is a zombie love story set in Chicago.
