PHOENIX -- A woman was hit by a car and killed while crossing a northwest Phoenix early Friday morning.

It happened near 43rd Avenue and Cactus Road at about 7 a.m.

According to Steve Martos of the Phoenix Police Department, a husband and wife in their 50s were crossing the street at Poinsettia Drive (just south of Cactus Road) when a car hit the woman. She was pronounced dead at the scene.

It's not clear if the couple was in a crosswalk.

Video from the scene showed officers questioning another woman who is believed to have been driving the car.

Police said it's possible that a second car might have hit the victim and then fled the scene.

Few details were immediately available, but southbound 43rd Avenue was closed in the area while detectives conducted their investigation.
