MESA, Ariz. -- Crews from the Mesa Fire Department rescued a man, horse and buggy from a canal at Greenfield and McKellips roads Thursday afternoon.

A horse pulling a buggy apparently veered close to the edge of the canal to keep its distance from a car parked nearby and the man and horse slipped into the canal.

"Crews disconnected the horse from the carriage and walked it through the calm water to an area the horse could be walked up and out," said Forrest Smith, spokesman for the Mesa Fire Department.

It took rescuers less than 20 minutes to get the man and horse out of the canal.

The horse and its owner were not injured.
