Drive hammered over the holiday weekend, get nailed
By Mike Gertzman
SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. -- The message is clear this holiday weekend: "drive hammered, get nailed."
Dozens of law enforcement agencies are adopting a zero tolerance policy for people who are caught driving drunk over the New Year weekend.
Task forces from about 70 agencies will be conducting checkpoints, which you simply can't avoid. The Scottsdale Police Department will be doing saturation patrols, which is where squads of officers flood parts of town.
"DUI is something that is senseless, and that's the biggest thing for officers. When we look at a DUI wreck scene, we say 'this did not have to happen,'" says Scottsdale Police sergeant, Mark Clark.
Thanksgiving through the New Year weekend is the busiest time annually for DUI arrests. Over the past year alone, DUIs in the Valley have risen by about 1,000. About 30 percent of all fatal crashes are the fault of drunk drivers.
