What to eat to boost your immune system, avoid the flu

PHOENIX -- Flu season is in full swing and while you might have gotten a flu shot, that's no guarantee that you won't get sick.

Dr. Ed Lamadrid, an acupuncturist and Oriental medicine expert, offered some suggestions to help you "hedge your bets" and boost your immune system.

Let's start with what what you eat. Onions, garlic, broccoli, tomatoes, reishi mushrooms, shitake mushrooms, apples, coconut water, honey and chicken soup are all great when it comes to helping you fight off bugs.

Swap your dehydrating coffee for green tea. Peppermint tea is also a good option and can help reduce inflammation.

Effective herbal remedies include turmeric, oregano, basil, cilantro and ginger.

Never underestimate the power of relaxation and plenty of good, restful sleep. If you're too stressed or run down, your immune system suffers, making you a target for bacteria and viruses.

Lamadrid also suggests you consider ancient therapies like acupuncture, cupping and massage therapy to boost the immune system.
