PHOENIX -- One person died Saturday morning after a car drove off the Loop 202 and landed on SR 51 at McDowell Road.

According to the Department of Public Safety, the vehicle was traveling westbound on the 202 when it fell from the overpass and landed on the road.

The car burst into flames following the fall, and was hit by another vehicle that was traveling on the 51.

Maricopa County Sheriff's Office deputy Doug Matteson was on his way home from work when he saw the car fall from the overpass.

"I just did my best to try to gain access in there, by pulling the car door apart while it was fully engulfed," said Matteson.

Matteson lost one of his legs in 2004 when he was hit by a drunk driver, but he said he doesn't let that prevent him from doing his job.

He admitted that he thought about the incident all day Saturday, and wondered if he could have done more to help.

There were three people inside the second vehicle. They suffered only minor injuries.
