Internet buzzing over Brewer reaction to 3TV question on climate changePosted: Updated:
PHOENIX -- It's a week old story, but once again Gov. Jan Brewer's response to a global warming question has the political world chattering.
Last Friday, KTVK aired a story and posted it on azfamily.com in which the governor said humans were not to blame for climate change and asked 3TV Political Editor Dennis Welch "where in the hell did that come from?"
Her answer quickly spread across the Internet last weekend. The story took off again after a photojournalist who witnessed the exchange described how Brewer lightly hit Welch on the back of the arm.
Photographer Michael Clawson's version was published on Wednesday on the widely read media blog, JimRomenesko.com. In part, Clawson's story said this:
"(Welch) had turned to a camera operator and seemed to be putting his microphone away. Brewer took her left hand, balled it into a fist and with the back of her hand she slugged the reporter on the back of his right arm. Not hard, but with enough force that he spun around to see what was going on. She leaned in real close and looked up (she's a shorter lady) and said in a whisper loud enough for most of us to hear, 'Where the hell'd that come from?'"
Jim Romenesko's blog has been picked up by various websites. Some of those sites have described "the hit" as a punch, some a slug and one even called it "a rumble." You can see the raw video above.
Brewer was asked by Welch whether humans were to blame for rising temperatures around the globe. After answering that she did not believe people were responsible, it appeared the interview was over as the governor started to walk away.
However, she turned around and lightly hit Welch in the arm to get his attention. The punch was included in the original story that aired Friday.
Welch tells azfamily.com he never felt like Brewer meant him any harm and that the hit was neither hard nor malicious.
The question about climate change came from Welch following the governor's speech on Thursday at the grand opening of the Hickman Feed Mill in Buckeye, Ariz.
Brewer was set to give a speech about energy policy to the Western Governors' Association which held its annual winter meeting in Scottsdale over the weekend.
