Anthem man wins Baja 1000Posted: Updated:
PHOENIX -- Imagine driving over 1,000 miles through some of the roughest terrain Mexico has to offer, with no sleep for 38 hours?
That's what Joe Bacal of Anthem did last month when he won the Baja 1000 for the second time. The Baja is the longest and wildest off-road race in the world.
Bacal drove 1,121 miles in 38 hours and 22 minutes.
He did it in a Lexus LX570. The body and engine are stock, but the interior is outfitted with special racing seats, seat belts and a GPS. It also has King shocks that cost around $5,000 each.
This race was extra special for Bacal because he overcame cancer five years ago and wanted to show the world that he could "Iron Man" the drive and show what's possible after a cancer recovery.
Bacal is a long time driver and will race the Baja again, but this win will be one of the highlights of his career.
