Woman wanted for Thanksgiving Day murderPosted: Updated:
EL MIRAGE, Ariz. -- Police in El Mirage are looking for the suspect in a Thanksgiving Day murder, but she doesn't fit the usual profile. Detectives said a 27-year-old woman going by the nicknames "Featherwood" and "Shoelaces" pulled the trigger.
Police say Rachel Diane Smith is armed and dangerous and on the loose somewhere in the Valley. Smith is 5 feet 4 inches tall, weighs 130 pounds, and has a distinctive tattoo on the front of her neck.
Neighbors at the murder scene said they remember Smith and her tattoo well, but they didn’t want to be identified talking about her.
“Twice she's been over there with [the victim],” said one of those neighbors. “And she actually stood right there at the edge of the driveway while [the victim] came over to get a cigarette.”
The victim in the case is Tod Guiles. The 29-year-old was released from prison recently after spending several months behind bars for drug charges. According to police, Guiles and Smith were acquaintances who had gotten in an argument the night before Smith is suspected of shooting Guiles.
“They went in the garage and that's when they got into a little feud, argument,” said the unidentified neighbor 3TV spoke to Tuesday afternoon. “But the next morning I didn't think it would lead to [shooting].”
According to police, Smith is a transient who’s also wanted in Southern California. Detectives, however, believe she’s still in the Valley.
“We do ask that you do not approach her. She is considered armed and dangerous,” said Detective Kim Walden of the El Mirage Police Department.
Candles still stand outside the house where Guiles was killed, although his family wasn’t home to comment on Tuesday evening.
Meanwhile, neighbors remain on edge.
“It pretty much scared a lot of people in the neighborhood, a lot of people are moving. Two days after it happened, people were gone,” the anonymous neighbor said.
Police want people with information about Rachel Smith to call El Mirage Police at 623-933-1341 or Silent Witness at 480-WITNESS (948-6377), 1-800-343-TIPS (8477) or 480-TESTIGO (837-8446).
