MESA, Ariz. -- Mesa police said an officer shot a dog after it attacked its owner Wednesday night.

That dog is still on the loose.

Witnesses told police that the man was walking his American bulldog near University Drive and Meridian Road when it turned and attacked, apparently unprovoked.

As Mesa Fire Department personnel treated the 22-year-old man for numerous puncture wounds to his thigh, wrist and abdomen, the dog attempted to approach and lunged toward an officer.

The officer shot the dog in the chest. The animal survived and ran away, leaving a trail of blood.

Ground and air units searched for the large white and brown dog, but it was not found.

The man was transported to a hospital for treatment of his non life-threatening injuries.
