PHOENIX -- With the holiday season in full swing it’s perhaps only fitting that gas prices are falling faster than Santa Claus down a chimney.

According to AAA Arizona, the average price of gas in the Grand Canyon State has decreased for the fifth straight week.

The statewide average fell 5.6 cents to $3.382 per gallon.

“After shedding more than a quarter in the last month, Arizona’s fuel average finally dipped back below the national average and is now among the 20 lowest fuel averages in the country,” said Linda Gorman, director of communications and public affairs for AAA Arizona. “This is a trend we anticipate seeing through the end of the year, barring unforeseen circumstances.”

Tucson has the lowest average gas price in the state at $3.152 per gallon, while Flagstaff has the highest average price at $3.684 per gallon.

Arizona’s declining gas prices are in line with the rest of the country, as average prices across the U.S. dropped by 2 cents this week to $3.409 per gallon.

Missouri has the lowest average gas price in the continental U.S. at $3.139 per gallon, while motorists in the state of New York pay the most at the pump with an average price of $3.888 per gallon.
