MESA and GILBERT, Ariz. -- They say that politics makes for strange bedfellows, but, if a strange case now unfolding in the East Valley is any indication, politics can also make for very hostile and angry bedfellows, as well.

The story began last weekend when a 28-year-old Mesa resident named Holly Nicole Solomon, in a fit of rage, allegedly ran over and critically injured her 36-year-old husband, Daniel, with the couple's SUV. The reason, according to Gilbert police, is that Holly Solomon was furious with her husband after learning he had not voted against President Barack Obama in last week's election.

"He did not vote," said Sgt. Jesse Sanger with the Gilbert Police Department. "His wife just found this out and became very upset and it escalated from there."

Indeed, according eyewitness accounts contained in police reports, Holly Solomon circled around a light pole in the parking lot as many as 15 times in her SUV, pursuing her husband as he attempted to dodge the vehicle on foot.

"At some point he left the light pole, trying to run away," Sanger said.  "She did strike him with the vehicle, pinning him underneath."

Multiple 911 calls from people in the parking lot at the time alerted authorities to the bizarre scene.

Daniel Solomon was transported to a local hospital in critical condition, reportedly suffering a broken pelvis, torn arteries to his bowels and the possibility of "permanent disfigurement."

Holly Solomon, who is reportedly six months pregnant, was taken into custody and on Tuesday appeared before a jailhouse judge, who told her that she is now charged with three counts, including aggravated assault with a deadly weapon and reckless driving.

Solomon had nothing to say during the brief proceeding.

According to police reports and court documents, Holly Solomon hates Obama, blaming him for problems of her family -- -problems now greatly increased with a pregnant young wife behind bars held on a $50,000 bond and her husband in the hospital with wounds that will undoubtedly change his life forever.

Sanger said there's no evidence that impairment -- either by alcohol or drugs -- was a factor in Saturday morning's incident.

A status conference for Solomon has been set for Nov. 16, followed by a preliminary hearing on Nov. 20.
