Mesa residents angered by proposed cellphone tower

MESA, Ariz. -- Some people in Mesa are fighting a proposed cellphone tower.
It would be erected by AT&T in a private, vacant lot near Baseline and Gilbert roads. The tower would be disguised as a palm tree with several real ones planted around it, but neighbors liken that to sweeping dirt under a rug.
"It would be an eyesore," said opponent David Brown.
AT&T has a gap in its coverage in the area but is required by its FCC license to provide good service to customers. The tower meets local and federal policies and guidelines.
"The Board of Adjustment makes the decision," said Mesa Zoning administrator Gordon Sheffield. "If it's appealed, it can go to Superior or federal court."
"We're going to sign a petition and go door to door," said opponent Philip Schramm.
A decision on the matter was postponed until the Board of Adjustment's next meeting on Dec. 11 at 5:30 p.m.
