PAULDEN, Ariz. -- Two horses and a dog were killed Sunday when a train struck a horse trailer in the town of Paulden.

Deputies with the Yavapai County Sheriff’s Office responded at around 7:20 a.m. after receiving a report that a train had collided with a vehicle.

According to YCSO, a 71-year-old man told deputies that he had been towing the trailer with his truck and didn’t see the train or hear the horn as he drove over the tracks. The man added that his vision was limited due to ice on the windows.

The man was not injured, and his truck suffered only minor damage.

The crew operating the train told deputies that they did sound a horn before reaching the railroad crossing, but the truck continued on its path.

The crew added that they initiated an emergency stop system and continued to sound their horn, but the truck never stopped.

The driver has been cited for failing to stop at a railroad crossing.
