DWTS co-host Brooke Burke battling thyroid cancerPosted: Updated:
PHOENIX -- Scary news for reality star Brooke Burke-Charvet, who announced in a video blog that she has thyroid cancer.
“Long story long, I got my results back and they were not good,” Burke says in the three minute long Youtube video posted Thursday and titled “Brooke Burke-Charvet: Cancer, Me?”
“I'm going to have a nice big scar right here across my neck,” Burke said, rubbing her throat and tracing the imaginary scar she will eventually have across her neck.
Thyroid cancer is extremely treatable with an excellent survival rate, but has side effects that last a lifetime.
“Hormones that your thyroid makes are essential to every part of your body. You can’t survive without that so we have to take thyroid hormone replacement drugs, everyday, for the rest of our lives,” said thyroid cancer survivor Joan Hedman, who hosts support groups in the Valley.
Hedman has been in remission for seven years. She said detection is the hardest part of fighting thyroid cancer because there are often no symptoms. Burke confirmed she knew absolutely nothing was wrong until her doctor found a nodule on her throat during a routine checkup.
“I feel really good. I've never felt better. That's what so crazy about this whole thing,” said Burke.
“That's what happened with me,” said Hedman. “They looked at it and thought, ‘that doesn't look good.’ And then from there we went on and found a cancer that had significantly spread. And if we would have let it go I probably wouldn't be standing here today.”
Hedman said she hopes having a high-profile face fighting this fight will bring more awareness to the little known thyroid cancer.
“I'm just going to make a positive out of this negative thing,” Burke said in her video, adding that she has scheduled a surgery but not elaborating on when.
If you or someone you know is battling thyroid cancer, Hedman said the local chapter of the Thyroid Cancer Survivors Association, Inc. can help.
