PHOENIX -- The Phoenix Fire Department’s Urban Search and Rescue team, Arizona Task Force 1, is heading to the East Coast to assist with the recovery efforts following Hurricane Sandy.
On Wednesday, the Phoenix Fire Department announced that the elite, 80 person team had been deployed to New York City.
Arizona Task Force 1 will be traveling across the country in an 11 or 12 vehicle caravan.
The team is comprised of individuals from both the Phoenix Fire and Police Departments.
The group is no stranger to natural disasters, having previously responded to Hurricane Katrina in New Orleans in 2005 and Hurricane Ike in Galveston, Texas in 2008.
Arizona Task Force 1 was also called up following the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks in 2001, and the Oklahoma City bombing in 1995.
Hurricane Sandy hammered the East Coast this week, leaving millions of homes and businesses without power.
As of Wednesday, Hurricane Sandy had been linked to more than 60 deaths.
