TEMPE, Ariz. -- The Tempe Police Dept. is making it easier for residents to find registered sex offenders in their neighborhoods.

The department has just implemented the Sex Offender Notification Program called "OffenderWatch," which is now available on the main page of the Tempe Police website. The site will show Level 2 and Level 3 offenders, which are required by law to register.

Tempe residents can type in their address, and find out which sex offenders live within one or two miles of their home. They can also click on the offenders picture for more information about them. Resident can sign-up for alerts when an offender moves into the area. The site provides helpful tips and information for community safety.

"The implementation of this program significantly enhances our ability to search locally, statewide, and nationwide for sex offender information," said Tempe Police Chief Tom Ryff. "The program is a great example of our use of technology to prevent and fight crime."

On Halloween night, Tempe detectives will be engaged in a Sex Offender Monitoring Operation of Level 2 & 3 Offenders. They will make sure they are registered by law, and are where they say they are. The operation is targeted to protect children on Halloween, especially vulnerable as they trick or treat.

OffenderWatch is used by more than 1,000 agencies nationwide. Local agencies who currently use it include Tempe Police Department, Maricopa County Sheriff's Office, Mesa Police Department, Glendale Police Department, and Avondale Police Department. Other metro area agencies are reviewing the program.
