1 Killed, 3 wounded in shooting at Chandler apartment complexPosted: Updated:
CHANDLER, Ariz. -- Investigators are still trying to determine what sparked a shooting that left one man dead and put three other people in the hospital.
It happened about 8:30 p.m. Thursday at an apartment complex near Arizona Avenue and Elliot Road in Chandler.
Police say William Hammond, 48, was killed. The names of the other three people involved have not been released and their conditions were not available.
According to investigators, Hammond was armed with a handgun when showed up at the Laguna Village Apartments and confronted three people inside one of the units.
That confrontation spawned an argument that spilled into a courtyard and ended in gunfire.
"Multiple shots were fired from two weapons we believe," said Sgt. Joe Favazzo of the Chandler Police Department in an email to media outlets.
Hammond died on the scene. The other three victims were taken to local hospitals.
Neighbors said they heard people talking, but not screaming or yelling, before bullets starting flying. Those neighbors said several shots were fired.
At this point, detectives believe Hammond pulled the triggered first and that the residents of the apartment returned fire.
"The detectives are still working to determine the relationships between all the parties involved," said Officer Ashley Lewis, who was on the scene all night.
It's still not clear why Hammond went to apartment to confront the residents.
Favazzo confirmed that Hammond has a criminal record. Records from the Arizona Department of corrections show that Hammond was out on parole after serving time at the Arizona State Prison Complex-Eyman in Florence for a 1991 armed robbery. According to those records, he was released in May 2010.
Police were wrapping up the on-scene portion of their investigation at about 7:30 a.m., 11 hours after the 911 call came in. Investigators hoped to release more information later in the day.
