TEMPE, Ariz. -- Police say one man was shot inside a medical marijuana business near Southern and College avenues in Tempe Thursday night.

Authorities said there are multiple suspects on the loose.

According to Tempe police, three to six suspects, described by witnesses as black males, entered Top Shelf Med, formerly AzGoGreen Co-op, located at 426 E. Southern Ave.

The suspects confronted an employee. The victim was struck and then shot by one of the suspects.

Police officers began arriving on scene within three minutes.

The suspects fled on foot, and have not been apprehended. One of the suspects is described as being in his early 20s with a thin build. The intentions of the suspects are unknown. Investigators are not aware of any property being removed from the business.

The victim was treated by Tempe firefighters and transported to a local hospital with life-threatening injuries.

Police said Top Shelf Med operates to some degree as a medical marijuana co-op.

Tempe detectives assisted the Drug Enforcement Administration in an investigation regarding distribution of marijuana about a year ago.

Recently, the Tempe Police Department has initiated a separate investigation into the activities of the business. Police said they have reason to believe that this business has been operating outside the medical marijuana legislation that was passed by Arizona voters.

This investigation remains active and ongoing.

Anyone with information regarding the shooting Thursday night is asked to contact the Tempe Police Department at 480-350-8311 or Silent Witness at 480-WITNESS.
