PHOENIX -- A 21-month-old Valley boy has died following a Friday afternoon incident that police are calling “suspicious.”

Authorities responded to 71st Avenue and Lower Buckeye for what was first said to be a child drowning call.

Investigators were told the child, Xavier Martinez, was in the care of a male family member, and may have choked on a garden hose.

While police have not revealed many details about the case, they did say that there’s reason to believe this wasn’t an accident.

“Often times there are accidents that occur that are legitimate, but the evidence should bear that out if that’s the case. At this point we believe it’s suspicious and we’re going to go ahead and check into that,” said Sgt. Tommy Thompson with the Phoenix Police Department.
