PRESCOTT, Ariz. -- The Yavapai County Sheriff’s Office has arrested a sex offender for allegedly failing to register with Arizona law enforcement.

David Steltenpohl, 44, was arrested Wednesday and charged with a felony count of failing to register.

Phoenix Police arrested Steltenpohl in 1986 for burglary and sexual assault. He was convicted later that year of attempted sexual assault.

Steltenpohl has since been living in California and Iowa, where he had registered as a sex offender.

Steltenpohl returned to Arizona earlier this year. A sex offender compliance detective with the YCSO discovered that he had been in the area of Paulden last month.

On October 6, YCSO deputies came across Steltenpohl in Prescott while conducting an unrelated investigation.

Steltenpohl’s whereabouts were forwarded to the sex offender compliance detective, who then verified that Steltenpohl had committed a registration violation.

On Wednesday, Steltenpohl was arrested in Prescott and booked into the Camp Verde Detention Center.
