Bread Good for so much more than sandwiches and toast

PHOENIX -- It’s amazing what you can do with just a plain slice of bread.

Remove the scorch taste from rice by laying a slice of bread on top of it while it is still hot. Replace the lid and wait 3 or 4 minutes. Remove the bread and the scorched taste will be gone.

We all know that brown sugar and marshmallows get hard after time no matter how well you wrap them or what you store them in. Instead of throwing them out, add a couple of bread slices and wait a couple of days. They will be soft again. This also works for homemade cookies that have gotten hard.

When you are broiling prevent flare-ups and broiler fires by laying bread in the bottom of the broiler pan before you put the rack on. The bread will absorb the grease and keep it from flaring up and also make cleaning the broiler pan easier.

To clean greasy hand prints on wall paper, cut the crust off of WHITE bread and roll it into a ball or log. Rub over the dirt and it will be gone. This also works for dusty oil paintings. Gently rub with the bread and it will absorb the dust and dirt. You will need to vacuum up bread crumbs when you are done.

If you break glass, sweep up the large pieces and then to pick up the small shards of glass cover with bread and press gently. The bread will trap the glass particles and you can throw them out. Do not do this with large pieces, they could push through the bread and cut you.

If you have a chest of drawers or similar piece with odor in it, take a bowl and put a piece of white bread in it. Pour white vinegar over it and put in the drawer. Close the drawer and wait at least 24 hours. The bread/vinegar will absorb the odor.
