OAK CREEK CANYON, Ariz. -- The Coconino County Sheriff's Office is investigating a possible double-suicide in Oak Creek Canyon.

The bodies of woman and her adult son were found propped up against a log alongside Highway 89A at about mile post 390, approximately a quarter mile from the visitor center at the Oak Creek Canyon Overlook.

The Sheriff's Office received a call around 11 a.m. on Tuesday from a United States Forest Service employee.

That person reported that a man and woman came to the Overlook Vistor Center to report finding the bodies. An officer with the Arizona Department of Transportation was first on the scene and reported both people had gunshot wounds to the head.

Sheriff's detectives found what are believed to be two suicide notes near the bodies, one from each person. A handgun was found in the son's lap.

Judging from the wording on the two handwritten notes, and evidence found at the scene and on the bodies, Detectives are investigating the possibility that the female shot herself first and the male then used the same weapon to shoot himself.

The Sheriff's Office is withholding the names of the deceased until next of kin is notified.
