WASHINGTON (AP) -- The Arizona Senate race continues to heat up as national Republicans weigh in for the first time with an ad that criticizes Democratic nominee Richard Carmona as being handpicked by President Barack Obama.

The National Republican Senatorial Committee is spending $570,000 on a television ad that runs in Arizona markets over the next week. National Democrats confirmed earlier this week they were spending a similar amount on an ad critical of Republican Jeff Flake.

The new ad follows the same strategy as Flake did after he emerged from a hard-fought primary. It makes the case that Flake is known for taking on Washington while stating that Carmona was personally recruited by the president.

The investment from national Republicans also reflects a tight race in a state that leans heavily Republican.
