Winslow man drowns after falling into Chevelon Canyon RiverPosted: Updated:
HOLBROOK, Ariz. -- A man drowned last week after falling into the Chevelon Canyon River east of Winslow.
Michael J. Conlon, 62, of Winslow, and four friends had been traveling on Territorial Road when they stopped at the Chevelon Canyon River Bridge at about 4:30 p.m. on Sept. 28.
Conlon had walked to the east side of the river and was standing on a rock ledge about 15 to 20 feet above the surface of the water when he slipped and fell, according to the Navajo County Sheriff's Office.
Witnesses reported Conlon started to yell for help, saying the water was cold. One witness jumped into the water, but he could not find Conlon.
Members of the Joseph City Fire Department and Winslow Fire Department Dive Teams responded and Conlon's body was recovered from the river at about 6:30 p.m.
Conlon's death occurred in a recreational area used by many people who stop along Territorial Road and the bridge.
