TONOPAH, Ariz. -- The Maricopa County Sheriff's Office is investigating after human remains were found near an irrigation canal in Tonopah Monday morning.

Some workers near the irrigation canal at 387th and Orangewood avenues found what appeared to be skeletal remains and called the sheriff's office, according to MCSO spokesman Officer Chris Hegstrom.

MCSO investigated and found body parts scattered throughout about a mile area.

"We have found the parts of an entire body," Hegstrom said.

Investigators believe the remains have been there for some time, but are not able to give a time frame at this point.

It is not known if the remains are that of a male or female. Investigators will try to identify the body and determine what happened.

At this point, it is being investigated as a suspicious death.
