Pilot killed in plane crash north of Safford

SAFFORD, Ariz. -- An Alabama man died in a plane crash in southeastern Arizona over the weekend.

The Graham County Sheriff's Office said the small plane went down Sunday afternoon in rough terrain on the San Carlos Apache Indian Reservation.

The pilot was pronounced dead at the scene. He has been identified as Adam Schmitt, 50.

He and his brother were flying from Safford to Show Low when the crash occurred. His brother was flying in a separate plane.

The U.S. Bureau of Indian Affairs and the Federal Aviation Administration completed their preliminary investigation at the crash site. The FAA took custody of the plane for further examination.
