2 cups (1 pound) butter
2 cups sugar
6 eggs
1 tsp. vanilla
8-9 cups flour, sifted
2 Tbsp. baking powder
1 egg, beaten with 1 Tbsp. water

Cream butter and gradually beat in sugar. Beat eggs until light; add to butter mixture and beat thoroughly.  Add vanilla. Sift flour and baking powder. Carefully blend into butter-egg mixture to make a soft dough. With lightly floured hands, form small piece of dough into a ball and roll out to make a 8-inch rope. Fold rope in half and twist two times to form cookie. Arrange on ungreased cookie sheet. Bake in a 375-degree oven for 20 minutes or until golden brown. Yield: 6-8 dozen cookies
