PHOENIX -- Police are investigating after a woman was reportedly shot in the head while sleeping in her bedroom.

According to police it happened just after 5 a.m. on Thursday. Police said somebody walked up to a bedroom window of an apartment at the home near 35th and Northern avenues and started shooting. At least five or six shots were fired.

The victim, a 25-year-old woman, was shot in the head.

"She's in extremely critical condition," said Sgt. Tommy Thompson with the Phoenix Police Dept. "Her condition has been stabilized. Just a tragic thing to have had happened."

There was also a 35-year-old woman in that bedroom at the time of the shooting. She was not hurt. A 16-year-old girl and a 17-year-old boy who were in another part of the home were also unharmed.

Sgt. Thompson said the early indications are that the suspect intended to shoot into this bedroom. "We just don't know who he was targeting. Whether he was targeting both women or this specific individual, but certainly to shoot into a bedroom window that many times, early in the morning, I think it's safe to say it was a target."

Police are still searching for the gunman. He is described as a black male who was driving a black Toyota Tundra pickup truck.

Anyone with information on this shooting is asked to contact the Phoenix Police Department.
