GOODYEAR, Ariz. -- A 2-year-old boy who was found in a backyard swimming pool in Goodyear Tuesday afternoon has died.

Paramedics were called to a home southwest of Van Buren Street and Sarival Avenue shortly after 4 p.m.

Firefighters said the little boy was not breathing when they arrived. The toddler was air-lifted to a Banner Thunderbird Medical Center. According to Detective Sgt. John Miller of the Goodyear Police Department, the child had a pulse when he was flown out.

The child died Thursday morning.

While there was a fence around the pool, investigators believe the gate might have been open or unlatched.

Police say the water in the pool was green and murky.

Miller said the little boy had been missing for about five minutes before his parents found him in the water and pulled him out. As many as five or six people were home when the toddler found his way to the pool, Miller said.

The case is under investigation.

"You have to watch your kids around water, no matter how many people are in the house, no matter what kind of precautions you have," Miller said.
