PHOENIX -- Democrat Richard Carmona's campaign for U.S. Senate was bragging Tuesday about having their best week of online fundraising so far.

Officials with the former U.S. surgeon general say the campaign hauled in more than $51,000 over the past week.

Andy Barr said the money came pouring in after sending donors a pair of separate emails.

The bump in cash comes on the heels of a poll showing Carmona trailing his Republican rival, Jeff Flake, by 1 point.

Coming into that race, Flake was the odds-on favorite to win the seat being vacated by Sen. Jon Kyl at the end of the year.

Still, the New York Times polling guru, Nate Silver, still has Flake with a 75 percent chance of beating Carmona.

To date Carmona's campaign has reported raising more than $2.9 million, according to the Center for Responsive Politics. And as of the beginning of August, the Democratic candidate had about $1.8 million left in his campaign coffers.

Flake, a six-term congressman, has raised about $5.5 million to pay for his campaign. Unlike Carmona, Flake battled a well-financed opponent in the GOP primary.

That left him with $1.7 million in cash on hand as of the last reporting period, which ended Aug. 8.
