CAVE CREEK, Ariz. -- A Valley couple is facing child abuse charges after they allegedly left their kids in their car while they drank at a bar.
A Maricopa County Sheriff’s deputy was patrolling the parking lot of a Cave Creek bar on Friday night when he saw a 3-year-old and a 4-year-old sitting in a car. It appeared as if the kids had been sitting in the vehicle for an extended period of time.
Shortly after the deputy came across the children, Mesa residents Desiree David, 28, and Landrey Alex, 25, emerged from the bar appearing to be highly intoxicated.
According to the Maricopa County Sheriff’s Office, it was later determined that both Alex and David’s blood alcohol content was more than double the legal limit to drive.
Deputies eventually learned that the couple had arrived at the bar with their children around 8:30 p.m. At around 11:00 p.m., Alex and David allegedly took their kids back to their car so they could continue drinking.
“This was great police work by my deputies and potentially saved the lives of these two children, their parents, and anyone who they may have passed on the highway, since it was believed they were going to drive home,” said Sheriff Joe Arpaio.
Both Alex and David were booked into the 4th Avenue Jail on child abuse and endangerment charges.
