Truck hits, kills NAU student riding bike in FlagstaffPosted: Updated:
FLAGSTAFF, Ariz. -- A student at Northern Arizona University was killed while riding her bicycle in Flagstaff Sunday night.
Jordan A. Murphy-Mahoney, 21, was riding in the area of Walapai Drive and Mohawk Road around 11 p.m. when she was struck from behind by a truck, according to the Flagstaff Police Department. The driver fled the scene after the collision.
Murphy-Mahoney was treated by medics before police arrived but was pronounced dead at the scene.
The suspect vehicle was described as a light-colored truck either white or silver with significant front-end damage. Officers located the vehicle on a nearby street.
The officers began talking with a woman who was out looking at the damage to the vehicle. Kelsey Lou Cody, 22, of Flagstaff, said she was not driving the vehicle when the damage occurred.
"But through further investigation and evidence there was probable cause to determine Cody was driving the vehicle at the time of the collision," Sgt. James Jackson said.
Cody was arrested for failing to stop after being involved in an injury/fatal accident and for manslaughter as a result of the collision.
At this time, it is believed alcohol was a factor in the collision.
The investigation is still ongoing.
